After the Opium War in 1840, the Russians invaded from the north, which created a severe territorial crisis and forced the Qing government to loosen its restrictions on the region. As a result, many migrants from Shandong and Hebei subsequently relocated to the Heilongjiang area. This wave of migration is known as "The Northeast Rush". Most of the residents of Harbin today are descendants of these migrants.
