W: Frank, do you read newspapers or journals very often?
M: Well, I rarely read any journals, but I like the newspaper. I get one every day. I walk over to the store and I buy the paper, I go home, I sit down in my chair and I really enjoy reading it.
W: What do you read?
M: Well, first I look at the front page. And then, I turn to the sports section to find out how my teams are doing! I read all the articles about them. Usually I’ ve seen those games anyway so I like to compare what the writer says with what I think. And then I read the main stories, especially the scandals! But what I really enjoy are the crossword puzzles. I’ll sit for hours trying to figure some of them out. I have this electronic dictionary I sometimes use for the clues.
W: And what do you do if you can’t get a word?
M: Well, then I’ll usually take a break. I usually get everything eventually. You learn to see how these people think. It’ s the same with journalists. You get to know what their opinions and reactions are going to be.
W: You mean in the regular news?
M: Yeah. You see, I do read the articles about what the government’ s doing, and what’ s happening, but what you have to realize is that reporters are just people, like you. They have their own opinions about what’s going oa So you have to take what they say with a grain of salt. It’s a lot of half-truths they write to make you think what they want you to think about. You can get the basic information, but you have to use your own ideas to analyze the news. A lot of the time it’s really biased.
