Chang’e was the wife of the legendary hero Houyi, who shot down nine suns and thus was rewarded with a kind of elixir of life, which was then stealthily eaten by Chang’e. Chang’e rose up to the sky immediately after that and lived on the moon ever since. It is said that she regretted doing that as soon as she flew up onto the moon.
