Maritime Silk Road
Like the land Silk Road , the maritime Silk Road began in the Han dynasty (202 BC-220 AD).
As is widely known, during the Han dynasty the majority of processed and unprocessed silk, which was mainly produced in the southern and eastern coastal areas of China, was transported along the land Silk Road.
In ancient times these regions were prosperous centers of both silk production and ship building; therefore, the regions could not only supply export commodities, but also transport them overseas via sea routes.
During the Han dynasty this dual function of production and transportation constituted the material basis for a developing marine trade.
During the reign of Emperor Wu (140-87 BC) , a sea route was opened to reach Africa and Europe. It was the world’s first shipping lane/line across an ocean and the earliest maritime trade passage.
This allowed China to vigorously explore markets abroad and establish trade ties with foreign lands, thus laying a foundation for the maritime Silk Road.
In the Tang dynasty (618-907 AD), Chinese vessels sailed from Guangzhou City across the South China Sea towards the West , marking the official launch of the maritime Silk Road.
This South China Sea route not only shipped silk but also enhanced sino-foreign material and cultural exchanges.
Envoys dispatched by countries in Southeast Asia, South Asia, West Asia, and even Europe arrived in China via this sea route to establish diplomatic relations, buy silk, and conduct all kinds of trade.
Thus the maritime Silk Road became a corridor that promoted friendly relationships and connected the East and the West.
