    The chart shows the change of the number of people registering for the National Graduate Entrance Exam from 2002 to 2007. As is shown in the chart, there has been a steady rise in the candidates for post graduate study all through the years. The number jumps from 620 000 in 2002 to 1 282 000 in 2007—it is very astonishing indeed because the huge number of examination-takers has doubled in only 5 years. However, the year 2007 sees an obvious slow-down of the step, with only a slight rise of 12 000 applicants for the entrance exam.
    In my opinion, the increase comes from at least three reasons. First, the society requires more and more graduates with higher level of knowledge and the graduate study is usually regarded as the best way to help the students achieve that goal. In fact, not only university students but also those who work would like to apply for the graduate study with expectations of more chances in the future. Second, the enlarged enrollment of the university has forced the students to pursue a higher degree. With more university students graduating each year, the students have to keep themselves more competent than others; and since the graduate diploma more or less could prove their ability, they hope to win the better position than their peers when they look for jobs. Finally, Drawbacks in the personnel system help to speed up the wheel. For example, some companies in China chose postgraduates rather than undergraduates just to show that they are more "honorable" than others, despite skilled workers are virtually enough for the post.
    The statistics indicate that although the graduate education is still preferred by a considerable number of people, the slow-down in 2007 signals that people are becoming more reasonable when making decisions concerning their future. This will start a beneficial cycle so that the individuals who go to the graduate school only for "paper credentials" will no longer go for a "treasure hunt" at high "opportunity cost"; and the universities can save the educational resources to provide quality education for those who are devoted to the pursuit of knowledge.
