Work
- What job do you do?
I’m an English teacher in my hometown. Since I was in childhood, being a teacher has always been my career pursuit So I studied hard to get admitted into Normal University. Luckily, I become an English teacher after graduation. I enjoy this job so much.
- Do many people in your country choose to do that type of job?
Yes. In my country, people think highly of being a teacher which represents high social status and good salary. More importantly, it’s a noble profession that can influence other’s life path and nurture the talented for our society and country. On a more practical side, teaching is a stable job with two long vocations every year, so it’s an ideal career choice for most people.
- What skills do you need for your job?
There are lots of skills needed to be a good teacher. For instance, firstly, a teacher should be good at expressing himself clearly. Secondly, interpersonal skills are also needed in dealing with students. Thirdly, one should be knowledgeable enough to deliver classes. Last but not least, generosity, thoughtfulness and kindness are much appreciated. Being a teacher may require more skills than I mention above. It is a lifelong career.
- What do you particularly like about your job?
Well, I like sharing my experiences and knowledge with young people so that they can learn from my mistakes and may have a bright future. Being able to bring positive influence on other people’s lives makes me feel fulfilled, and at the same time, I can also learn from them because they’re full of energy and innovative ideas. It’s an interactive process that can benefit both sides. On top of that, since I gained a lot from my teachers, I’d like to give back to my students.
Study
- What subject are you studying?
My major is economy and finance, which studies micro- and macro-economy, economic laws, accounting and so on. Those are compulsory courses. Apart from these, we have optional courses, such as English literature, western culture, and psychology. I have been working hard to pass all those tests.
- Why did you want to study that subject?
It’s one of my favourite subjects. What appeals me is: what economy to a country is what symptoms to a patient. Understanding the financial and economic situation of a country helps us to diagnose whether this country is developing smoothly or adversely. I’m eager to dig into the mystery of economics and find out the answers.
- Do many students in your country study that subject?
Yes, it has always been a hit subject to study. Since China has grown into the second largest economy in the world, tons of economic-related areas are waiting to be explored, such as trade and economic policy. Increasing economic activities home or abroad also beckon thousands of qualified practitioners and offer countless jobs every year. So many students choose this subject at college, thinking it could profit them and secure a job upon graduation.
- What skill can you learn from the subject?
This subject really benefits me a lot. It not only changes my way of thinking but also my behaviour. Analytical thinking has been well rooted in my mind and watching economic news has become part of my daily life. Every time I hear about economy-related policies launched by the government, I’ll intrinsically try to figure out the economic laws behind it. On a daily life basis, I get used to planning my personal expenditure and bargaining when I go shopping. Somebody may say I’m a penny pincher, but I would rather call it "make every penny count".
Gifts
- How often do you buy others gifts?
Well, in my country, it’s a tradition to buy others gifts in certain occasions, such as someone’s birthday, marriage, graduation, and on some festivals like Mid-autumn Day, Spring Festival and Dragon Boat Festival. Besides, when we drop a visit to our relatives, friends or patients, we also bring gifts with us as a gesture of goodwill. I send out gifts frequently and get gifts from friends quite often too.
- Do you prefer to receiving gifts or giving gifts?
Well, I’m the one who like giving gifts out, because I’d like to see the people I care smile and feel happy. Regardless of the value of the gifts, it represents my goodwill and regards. Meanwhile, giving gifts is an effective means to consolidate relationship with others. People like to deal with someone who is hospitable and generous. I’d like to be that kind of person.
- What kinds of gifts are popular in your country?
It differs from person to person, occasions to occasions. Most people choose gifts based on what they themselves like. A survey revealed that women tend to choose snacks, cosmetics, clothes and accessories as gifts, while men are more in favour of electronic products, sports products and DIY stuff. On festivals, people prepare gifts according to the tradition. For example, we give others mooncakes on Mid-autumn Day, glutinous rice dumpling on Dragon Boat Festival, and lucky money on Spring Festival.
- Why do people send gifts?
China is a country with a long history of sending gifts to each other. People regard it as a gesture of social etiquette, an expression of good wishes, or a memorial of tradition. For instance, we buy others mooncakes on Mid-autumn Day as a token to celebrate family reunion. We give children lucky money on Spring Festival to wish them to grow up happily with luck. When you give people things they like, it means you are caring about them and always thinking of them. It is not about the price of the gift, but it is the thought that counts. That’s why some people like DIY gifts, such as home-made food, or just simply writing a card.
