Hometown
- Where is your hometown? Can you describe a little of it?
Guangzhou is my birthplace. As we know, it’s the capital of Guangdong Province, a beautiful and dynamic metropolis in south China, famous not only for its economic strength, but also for its culture and history. I’m quite proud of my hometown.
- What do you like most of your hometown?
I’d like to say it is the food that I enjoy most. "Eating in Guangzhou" is a popular saying both at home and abroad. Restaurants, snack shops and tea houses are everywhere. "Dim Sums", kind of Cantonese traditional dessert, is one of my favourite. Also an astonishingly wide range of cuisine that caters to foodies from all over the world could be found here.
- Is there anything you dislike about it?
Of course. Because it’s a mega-city, there are lots of people coming from everywhere, making it more and more crowded, somehow bringing more social conflicts and a higher crime rate. Besides, the pollution caused by rapid economic development is a big concern. Blue sky and fresh air seem to have disappeared. That’s the part I can’t say that I enjoy.
- What changes have taken place in your city in recent years?
Well during last decade, I have been seeing lots of skyscrapers raised in the CBD, high-speed trains stretching to the neighbouring cities, and more cars running on the road. It is a good sign showing the city’s great vigour. However, every coin has two sides. The gap between poor and rich has increasingly widened. Air and water quality have worsen drastically. Authorities become aware and address these problems more and more seriously.
Animals
- What’s your favourite animal? Why?
Cats are my favourite animal. Because they’re cute and attached to people, I like hanging with them. The way they looked at me with innocent, crystal-like eyes makes me eager to hug them.
- Do you like the same animal now as you did when you were younger?
Yes. When I was a kid, I had a cat named Lily. She was rather my best friend than a pet. I believe it was this innocent creature that taught me how to love and care about others. Although she has left me long ago, the memory of it still reminds me to extend my love and care to other cats.
- What can you learn about a person from the animals they like?
It is said that people who like dogs tend to be opening, confident and honest, while those who like cats are likely to be careful, considerate and quiet. To some extent, it is true that the choice of animals can reflect someone’s personality. Since I’m a cat loving person, I’d prefer to read in a quiet place, such as coffee shop, and enjoy the tranquil moment away from the crowds. Social activity is really not my type.
- Which animals are popular as pets in your country?
I should say people in my country think dogs are the most ideal pet, because they are considered to be the best friend to human. They are loyal and obedient to their master. They could be cute and small, or strong and big. They keep good company no matter when you’re feeling bad or good. Besides, walking a dog is good exercise for adults and senior people. Indeed, there are loads of benefits in keeping dogs as pets.
