问题 You will now read a short passage and then listen to a talk on the same academic topic. You will then be asked a question about them. After you hear the question, you will have 30 seconds to prepare your response and 60 seconds to speak.
Scope Creep
In economics, business, and law, "scope creep" refers to a situation which customers expect services in excess of those contracted for. The elements to such a situation are 1) a signed contract spelling out terms of service. 2) a demand by the customer that performance exceed goods or services actually named in the agreement. Typically, disagreement between parties centers on what is "implied" by this or that key term. As might be expected, the phenomenon is a common pitfall in international business where expectations across cultures vary widely.
Now hear a talk on the same subject.
Question: Using information from the reading and the lecture, explain how the lecture is related to the reading passage.
Yesterday we were talking about "scope creep", but ran out of time before I could give you an example. Let’s talk about my friend Joe who has a big construction company here in Missoula. Joe and I went to high school together and he told me a story about when he was just starting his business.
It seems an elderly lady wanted him to build a fence around her house. Joe’s a trusting guy and he agreed without asking them to write up any kind of a contract. Well, he got the job done in a couple of days and asked the lady for his money. The lady asked him why the fence wasn’t painted white yet! Joe’s a construction guy and to him, building something does not mean painting it. The woman was a demanding sort, and to her "building" a fence means painting it, too. In the end, Joe painted it, but he didn’t get the extra money for painting the fence. So the lesson for my friend is to make sure both parties understand what they are agreeing to. Without this agreement in mind, no contract will succeed.

答案 The lecture illustrates the phenomenon of scope creep which refers to the demand that one party provide goods or services which they did not intend to provide.
The professor in the lecture explains this concept by giving a story about when his friend started his own business a few years ago.
According to the lecture, a friend of the professor is an owner of a construction company. He was once employed by a female client to build a fence around her yard without signing up any contract. When the construction closed to the end, the client asked him to paint the fence white.
However, his friend was not happy because he believed the painting was not included but the client believed building fences includes the painting. Later, his friend painted the fence but didn’t get the extra money for the painting. This is a real life example of scope creep, and the lesson his friend learned is that it is important to sign up a contract in business.
