Once living in the two flats on the second floor of the house, Strauss composed the famous tune, The Blue Danube, between the end of 1866 and the beginning of 1867. He was 42 then, already known in the music circle in Vienna, but it was after the birth of this tune that his position as "the King of Waltz" was established. The apartment house is not far away from the Danube, only about half an hour’s walk. The area used to be a big forest, through which Strauss often went to the riverside for a stroll. But now it has become a busy avenue with crowded tall buildings.
