   Little Tommy has been standing for two hours by the window, longing for his parents’ return from work. Behind him on a small table is a beautiful birthday cake, with seven unlit candles. It occurs to him that again this year he will have a birthday party without his parents.
   This is not a rare scene in the present world: a kid is disappointed by his or her parents who are always occupied with their work and can hardly find time to be with their children. These parents may be caught up in intense competition in society, yet it is no excuse for them to leave their kids totally "by themselves” or "in the care of the baby-sitters."
   Some parents may argue, "I have a family to support. I have to work hard. It’s my responsibility." But they don’ t know it is also their responsibility to be a qualified father or mother. While they work day and night to provide their children with food and clothes, they forget that their kids also have psychological needs to be met. The boy wants to play baseball with his father before supper, and the girl hopes that her mother can read her a beautiful poem before she moves to sleep. That is what constitutes an integrated childhood.
   If the parents fail their children, they will soon find a gap separating them from their kids, for the ties of communication have broken up. So it is not surprising to hear the anguished cry of a parent: “What on earth have we done? Why won’t our boy talk with us?"
   It is depressing. No parent likes such consequences. But such things could well be avoided if they had been considerate enough and managed to find some time for their children.
   If little Tommy’s parents can realize this, they will not leave the kid alone. It will come as a pleasant surprise when little Tommy turns to find the door open and his parents rush in and hug him, apologizing: "Dear, we’ re late. But it’s the last time ..."
