On the afternoon of 6th February 1958, eight members of the Manchester United football team died in a plane crash in Munich. The team, including the young Bobby Charlton, and their manager, Matt Busby, were travelling home to England from Belgrade. Having won the English football championship the previous year, they were competing in the European Championships’
Cup competition, and had ]ust won an important match against Red Star Belgrade.
The flight left Belgrade in fine weather, but conditions in Germany were not so good; it had been snowing and the temperature had fallen to below zero. The plane landed at Munich airport to take on more fuel, but the pilot had been having some problems with the engines, and there was a delay while some checks were made. After he had completed the refuelling, he radioed the control tower to say he was ready for take-off.
The pilot made two unsuccessful attempts to take off, but couldn’ t get enough power from the engines. As he was trying to take off for the third time, the disaster happened. The plane was increasing speed and had almost reached the end of the runway when it seemed suddenly to lose power. Out of control, it crashed into some buildings, and then burst into flames.
A total of 23 people lost their lives, including eight of the players, management staff, journalists, and aircrew. Matt Busby’ s dream of Manchester United becoming European Champions died that day in Munich, along with most of the team he had created. It was another ten years before that dream was finally realized.
