The term "essay" may be loosely used in the classroom to mean any piece of prose writing longer than one or two paragraphs. However, an essay is not really a piece of description, such as five or six【B1】______ , factual paragraphs about your new home. Nor is a story an essay; the【B2】______ experience or imaginative tales are narrative. An essay should be something different from simple description or narrative.
An essay may contain【B3】______ description, and it may have a narrative【B4】______ , it certainly requires knowledge and facts; but what makes it an essay is the【B5】______ of thought, opinion, and comment. A closer term is perhaps the word "article", in the sense of a【B6】______ article. The subject "how motor car works" calls for an【B7】______ , but it is completely factual. There is little【B8】______ for you to express your own thought or opinion. Similarly, "The Local Supermarket" is not a very suitable subject for an essay.
