Key and difficult points
Key point

Difficult point
To apply the rules of word stress flexibly and accurately in daily life.
Teaching procedures
Step 1:Warming-up
1.Daily greetings.
2.Let the students watch a video clip spoken by Dr.Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus,Director-general of WHO,in Tsinghua University during the outbreak of COVID-19,and ask them how they feel about his speech. After that, have a conversation with students like this:
“As we can see in the video,Dr Tedros calls on all people to contribute their own efforts to promote global solidarity and safeguarding the common future and destiny of mankind. He claims that the pandemic that millions of people have suffered from has taught us a valuable lesson. That is,coming together and working together is the best and only way forward.Boys and girls,I suppose all of you have felt great strength and shock from his speech, right?”
3.Then tell them that the stress plays an important role in pronunciation and lead into the topic.
Step 2:Presentation
Read the dialogue for the students. And ask them a question:“How many cities can you hear in this dialogue?”Then ask students to answer it and present three words“Boston”,“Moscow”,and“Toronto”on the blackboard.
Next, read the three words twice to ask students find out the differences of the teacher’s pronunciation.Students may answer like“Boston”and“Moscow”are stressed in the first syllable, while“Toronto”is different because the second syllable is stressed.
Then present the rules that for most two-syllable nouns,we usually stress on the first syllable, while polysyllabic words are usually stressed on the third syllable from the bottom, such as“'wonderful”,but“Toronto”is a special one.
Step 3:Practice
1.Role Play
Ask students to work in pairs in five minutes to have a role play to read out the dialogue on their textbook. While they are reading, they need to pay attention to the pronunciation and word stress. Then invite two pairs to perform in the front.
2.Association
Ask students to come up with more city names, and then share their findings by pronouncing them in the front.
Step 4:Production
Create a scenario that the school is going to organize a love outreach, and ask students to prepare an appealing speech to encourage students to take an active part in the activity.8 minutes will be given for discussion. Then invite some groups to share their performance.
Step 5:Summary and Homework
Summary:summarize what they have learned today with the students together.Encourage students to participate in various welfare activities.
Homework:suppose that the students are charity ambassadors, they need to shoot an English video to call on people to care for others.
