PART TWO
Interviewer:But first of all today, to the changing image of Sunday, no longer perhaps a day of rest and a time of the week when any shopping you did was confined to the Sunday papers, and perhaps chocolate and cigarettes. These days, though it’s against the law in England and Wales, quite a number of retail chains open up on Sundays and many of the independent shopkeepers too and even the shops that are allowed to open find the law riddled with anomalies and I think it is pretty well-known you can buy a magazine but not a Bible on a Sunday; fresh fruit and vegetables but not fresh meats razor blades but not a razor. Malcolm Parkinson, marketing director of B & Q, the D. I. Y chain, is for Sunday opening. Dave Davidson, who owns a fashion retail business in Swansea, is against Sunday opening. They’ve both joined me in our studio. Malcolm Parkinson, you obviously feel it’s worthwhile carrying on trading because of the volume of trade that comes in.
Malcolm Parkinson: Well, I think the first thing you’ve got to recognise is that a retailer is in the business of serving his customer. 125,000 people use our store’s on a Sunday - those people are saying they need our service. There’s working Mums and working husbands, the only time they can get out and buy the things that they need is on a Sunday. We believe strongly that they should be allowed to use their precious leisure time as they wish and not have to do everything on a Saturday, or much worse, have to give up some hours working and therefore pay to go and choose a kitchen or a greenhouse or the various things we sell.
Interviewer:So there is consumer demand. Dave Davidson, you are against Sunday opening. Why?
Dave Davidson: We feel that the Sunday would be ruined either as a religious day or a social day or whatever and lots of small shops would have to go to the wall and this is what we are afraid of. Eventually the market share will be fought for. All the big stores will be in the fight for their market share; profits at the moment are very keen so there will be a fight and the only one, that’s ninety-nine times out of a hundred, the small shop. ..
Interviewer:That’s the small retailer.
Dave Davidson:.. . and you know what’s going to happen then. In the places where there are people who need the small shops, they will be the ones that will surfer, the old people. All these sorts of things will be as the result of free \[day\] seven-day trading.
