Sally: Sid, are you sure you haven’t seen the missing file? I could have brought it into this office with some other files. Please have a good look everywhere. It’s marked "confidential" and it has a limited circulation.
Sid: Oh, Sally! Do go away. I’ve got much worse trouble than a lost file.
Sally: But it’s serious. The file has got all the details of the new desk range. Mr. Martin says if anyone copied our designs it could put back the work on the new desks at least a year! And we are supposed to be launching them at the International Office Equipment Exhibition.
Sid: Sally, please, something much worse has just happened.
Sally: Why, what’s the matter?
Sid: I’ve got the Security Office coming up in a minute. It’s just a matter of a loss of $200 in cash.
Sally: Oh, no! When did that happen, and how?
Sid: Somebody came in this morning, brought two hundred pounds worth of office furniture and paid in cash.
Sally: How odd! Don’t most people pay by cheque?
Sid: Yes, usually. Well, there was no one in the Accounts Department, so I went to get the key of the safe. When I got back…the money has gone.
Sally: How terrible, Sid. Is it your responsibility? Will they expect you to replace the money?
Sid: Well, I haven’t got $20, let alone $200. Oh, here’s the Security Officer now. Good morning. Mr. Johnson.
Johnson: Good morning. This is a very unfortunate affair. Now, Sid. I’ll have to ask you some questions about the money that’s missing.
Sally: Oh, Mr. Johnson, before you start, I’m afraid I have to report the loss of an important file. It’s a very serious matter.
(Later Mr. Johnson goes to see John Martin)
John: Yes, do come in, Johnson. I’ve just had the police inspector here. I would never have believed that the new clerk would have been so stupid as to steal the money. We’ll have to dismiss him. I suppose, but as I told the inspector. I don’t want to prosecute. But what I want to know now is whether you’ve any news for me about that missing file?
Johnson: I’m very sorry, Mr. Martin, I can’t trace it at all. Your secretary signed for it on Friday, there’s no doubt about that.
John: It’s very unlikely to be Sally. She is usually so careful.
Johnson: Surely she should have locked it up on Friday night before she left?
John: She usually does lock everything away before she leaves the office, but in this case she doesn’t even remember seeing the file.
Johnson: Mr. Martin, how long has she been working for you?
John: Oh, good gracious. I trust to be Sally absolutely. She’s worked for me…let’s see… for just over two years…ever since I joined the firm myself.
Johnson: You trust people very easily. Mr. Martin.
John: Of course I do. How can you work with people if you suspect them all the time?
Johnson: Well, in my job…
Sally: Oh, excuse me, Mr. Martin. Miss. Thorn is here. She’s been over to visit the subsidiary factory in Essex today. She wants to know if She can have a word with you.
John: Ask her to come in. Sally.
Sally: Right.
John: Johnson, you know Sophia Thorn, don’t you?
Johnson: She’s the management trainee, isn’t she?
John: Yes, that’s right. Hello. Sophia. Come in.
Sophia: I just wondered what you wanted me to do tomorrow. Mr. Martin.
John: Well, first of all, did you read all those papers I gave you on Friday?
Sophia: Yes, I’ve got them here in my brief-case. Here you are. And…er…here’s another file. I took this home as well and had a look through it over the weekend. I enjoyed reading Mr. Grant’s sarcastic comments about the proposed sales figures!
Johnson: Mr. Martin! Isn’t this the missing file?
John: What? Yes, it is. Thank goodness. Sally!
Sally: Yes. Mr. Martin?
John: We’ve found the missing file. Sophia, here, is guilty! She had it all the time.
Sophia: Oh, I’m sorry. I’d no idea you’d been looking for lt.
Johnson: Something will have to be done to make everyone in this company more security-minded.
