答案                   Combating Desertification and Sandstorms
    Man is now faced with a big problem w desertification and sandstorms, which is becoming more and more serious.  In the past season of spring, there were disastrous sandstorms for more than ten times which hit several major cities in North China. During these windy days the dust- laden blasts began to bury villages, blow into cities and suffocate residents. This has alarmed the whole nation about the devastating consequences of the development strategy that turned a blind eye on the environment.
    It is fairly well-known that we have achieved great progress in developing our economy. Over the past two decades, economic development has topped the agenda of the government, both central and local, to lift the country from poverty to prosperity. But it is less well-known that it is the ecological deterioration that creates these dusty days. Development has often been carried out at the cost of environment. Excessive land reclamation, grazing and lumbering have consequently caused a great loss of precious vegetation, resulting in the topsoil’s extreme vulnerability to erosion.
    Confronted with desertification and sandstorms, we should take a series of effective measures to cope with the situation. For one thing, the man-made calamities can only be and must be averted by the same world and share the same lot, we have to cooperate with each other, since this is a win-win matter. For another, the government should promulgate some measures, for example, encouraging farmers to return the reclaimed land into grassland or forests. Reforestation is likely to have a cooling effect and is also, of course, an important way to combat ecological degradation. Only in this way can we expect to combat desertification sandstorms in the long run.
