Scientific Discovery—Curse or Blessing
What scientific discoveries would bring human beings is a controversial topic.
Some people believe that new scientific discoveries nearly always bring to mankind a blessing. This can be clearly seen in people’s life. Just because of the new scientific discoveries, people’s ways of living have changed a lot. Communications are becoming easier and mankind’s vision of the global village is broadened; human beings have moved from primitive caves gradually to cozy and comfortable dwelling houses; shabby cotton clothes have been replaced by various good-quality wearing apparel, and simple food have been replaced by various kinds of nutritious food. It is undoubted to say that our earth and living standard of the inhabitants have been essentially changed.
Yet like a two-edged sword, some people believe that sometimes scientific discoveries may prove a curse upon human race if they are used or controlled by evil men or war maniacs. Here is a good example. Initially the invention of explosives were just for the sake of increasing productivity in mining industry, architectural industry, and so on. However, explosives were turned into fatal weapons by Hitler and his followers who wanted to dominate the whole world and establish the Third Reich. The Second World War was started by them and millions of innocent civilians were killed. This indicates that if some scientific discoveries are misguidedly used, they will bring great destruction to man’s peaceful environment and life safety.
From what has been stated above, we may draw the conclusion that the misuse of scientific discoveries must be prevented. In the first place, we should adopt a correct attitude when dealing with some scientific discoveries. Both positive side and negative side should be considered. In the second place, governments should legislate for the benefit of the people on the application of scientific discoveries. In a word, the positive aspects of scientific discoveries should be explored fully but their negative use should be strictly controlled.
