    Many language programs now are advertising offering the ideal way to learn the maximum amount of English in the shortest possible time at the most effective price, promising a shortcut to learning language. And many of those who have participated in the programs also highly praised the programs, claiming that the programs helped them pass various exams.
    Is there really any shortcut to learn English? Many learners ask this question and really hope to get an answer. Well, my answer to it is: there is no shortcut to learning a language but there must be a suitable way for each learner.
    If we read the courses of those language programs, we may find that they are usually test- oriented, like, programs on how to pass CET4 or 6, or on how to get high score in TOEFL, GRE or IELTS. Without making a thorough investigation, we can easily find the way they propagate their programs can be deceiving. For example, one famous language program says: "Come and learn New Concept English Book 2, and you’ll find it covers all the grammatical test items in National Entrance Examination. Anyone who has the common sense in learning English should know that any textbook for beginners should cover the basics of English. Analyzed further, we can see the negative waves lashing against normal English teaching and learning. It will further appeal to those who are test-motivated students and mislead people into believing that language is what is tested.
    Actually, knowing the knowledge about a language does not mean you can use it. What’s sadder about those programs is they focus on the technique of doing these tests rather than on the language skills themselves. That’s why many students who succeeded in obtaining a scholarship by scoring high in TOEFL and GRE can hardly understand an English lecture or write an academic essay and that phenomenon results in Chinese students being suspected of cheating in the exam by some American schools.
    In a word, I am more and more convinced that the idea of achieving "complete fluency in English in 90 days or your money back" is nothing more than misleading marketing hype, and the so called "intensive crash course" is one massive scare perpetrated on learners for the benefit of the practitioners of the profession. But sadly, many people fall for it and end up disappointed.
