答案                 Which Is More Important, Degree or Ability?
    This is an open question, about which there are considerable differences of opinion. Some people are of the opinion that degree is more important than ability. They say that in our present society, a higher degree is better than a lower one, a lower degree is better than none. Their reason is that those without degrees can hardly find their jobs; those with lower degrees such as a master’s degree and a bachelor’s degree cannot become professors in some famous colleges and universities.
    Others argue that ability is more important than degree.  They think that degree is merely a part of one’s ability. They say that there are many people who do not have academic degrees but can still succeed in their career development. Bill Gates is a typical example frequently given by them. They say Bill Gates hasn’t finished his bachelor’s degree but he has become a king of information technology.
    In my view, we must not deny the importance of a high degree, because with the development of our society, it is in need of a large number of people with both a high degree and ability. We do not welcome those only with a highest degree but with ordinary ability. Here I should like to put forward my viewpoint that mere degrees will be out of date, only ability will not be out of date. For example, a bachelor’s degree devaluated in 1990’s in China. A master’s degree devaluated at the turn of the century. In another decade, the devaluation of a doctor’s degree will be inevitable. As long as you really have ability, your ability will not be out of date. That’s why I think ability is more important than degree.
