答案
Should We Stop Celebrating Exotic Festivals?
Agree(同意)
In recent years, western festivals are getting more and more popular in China. Many Chinese, especially the young, are very excited about celebrating Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and Thanksgiving—you name it. So, it’s nothing unusual to see that when these holidays draw near, shopping centres, restaurants and hotels have decorated for the occasion, holiday messages flood the Internet, newspapers, TV and radio programs, friends exchange greetings when they meet each other, and people revel until very late in these holidays. However, I strongly question this necessity to celebrate foreign festivals.
On the one hand, the increasing popularity of foreign festivals will weaken the influence of the traditional Chinese festivals. As a matter of fact, it has driven the traditional Chinese festivals into an awkward situation. Now, people have much less interest in the celebration of Mid-autumn Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, or even the Spring Festival. The young knows very little about the traditions related to these festivals but to have meals and drinks on these occasions. In the long run, these traditional festivals, an important part of our cultural heritage, will fade away.
On the other hand, craze for western festival celebrations may drive Chinese culture into oblivion. Along with these foreign festivals come ideological and ethical values of foreign cultures. In face of the cultural invasion, chances are people will lose their cultural identity. Without cultural identification, a nation will lose its confidence, its ability to protect national interest, or explore its own way of development.
To sum up, it’s time to put a brake on this craze for foreign festival celebrations. Meanwhile, we should try our best to promote our cultural heritage, rediscover traditional cultural connotation and keep the independence of our national culture.

Since China opened its door to the outside world, new ideas, life styles and cultures which differ greatly from Chinese have also come into this country along with the introduction of foreign capital and technologies, and are becoming more and more popular. A good case in point is that nowadays many Chinese people, especially the young, begin to join in the celebration of the foreign festivals. Some people criticize them as blind foreign culture followers, but others think that the fact just reflects the cultural globalization. I do agree with the latter. The reasons are as follows:
First of all, the exchanges with the outside world will never be in one direction, so the cultures will be surely influenced by each other. Just as Chinese like Christmas Day, more and more westerners begin to enjoy the Spring Festival. Secondly, with the help of modern technology and convenient transport system, today’s world becomes much smaller, and no one country could quarantine itself from others. It is unrealistic to let everyone exclude the influence of foreign culture but stick to the old tradition. At last, China is now attracting more and more foreigners to study, work and live there, so it is obviously impossible for foreign guests to give up their cultures and live our festivals only—that is not the way to welcome guests.
In a word, we should not fear exotic festivals but welcome them with more tolerance, so that our society could become a real harmonious one.
