I’d like to talk about the Great Wild Goose Pagoda in Xi’an, Shaanxi province, China. Located in the Ci’en Temple, the pagoda was built in mid-7th century during the Tang Dynasty and now it’s become one of the most famous tourist attractions in Xi’an.
It’s said that it originally had 5 storeys, but after surviving several natural disasters and many times of reconstruction, this ancient building now has 7 storeys and a new facade. As a Buddhist architecture, the pagoda was built to store Buddhist sutras and thus became a holy religious site. More than that, the pagoda was also regarded as a symbol of cross-cultural communication in ancient China, because the great Monk Xuanzang who translated numerous Buddhist sutras from Sanskrit into ancient Chinese managed the translation academy right in this place.
Monk Xuanzang was a great monk and translator who traveled to India and brought back numerous Buddhist sutras. Without his effort in translating the sutras and promoting Buddhism in China, the religion wouldn’t have such a great impact oh Chinese culture. The prosperity of religious translation was only a part of the glorious achievements of the Tang Dynasty. The Silk Road and the all-embracing policy that welcomed people from around the world were the reasons why the prime of feudalistic China is the Tang Dynasty. Unfortunately, ancient China also had a long history of closing the country and cutting off ties from the outside world. The Great Wild Goose Pagoda stands there and reminds us that opening-up policy is the right choice for a country’s future.
