问题
In this question, you will listen to a conversation. Then you will be asked to talk about the information in the conversation and to give your opinion about the ideas presented. After the question, you will have 20 seconds to prepare your response and 60 seconds to speak. Listen to two students discussing tuition fees.
Question
The students discuss two solutions to the problem that affects them both. Describe the problem and the two solutions. Then state which of the two solutions you prefer and explain why.
S1 Hey Jessica, how are you ... uh, you don’t look so good, what’s wrong?
S2 Oh, I’m okay, but I just heard the university is going to raise tuition fees next semester.
S1 Really? I thought there was a freeze on tuition increases.
S2 Yes, but not now. Many universities are in financial trouble, but the government doesn’t want to spend billions of dollars to bail them out.
S1 Gee, I hope the fees don’t go up too high. I don’t know how I’m going to pay for tuition as it is. I’m already working part-time.
S2 I know. I am also working but I think I may have to consider getting a second job or increasing my hours at work. The trouble with that is if I work more than 15 hours per week, I won’t be able to go to school full-time and I won’t graduate on time. But I may just have to extend my studies.
S1 Well, I guess the other option we would have to look at is taking out more student loans. Did you happen to hear that the government would probably increase the amount of student loan?
S2 Actually, yes. They’re also going to revise some of the regulations around paying it back. I think the interest-free period will be extended from six months to a year, after we finish studying. Although I already have student loans, I am going to consider this option because I’d really like to graduate on time.
S1 Student loans do seem like the lesser of two evils, especially since you’d finish school on time. For me, I don’t really want to go more into debt if I can avoid it, so I think I may look at increasing my hours at work, and I’ll definitely be working full-time this summer. Maybe I’ll try to find a better paying job.

答案
The two students are having difficulty paying for the increased tuition fees. They came up with two solutions to pay the increased school fees. One is increasing the amount of time they spend working, and the other is taking out more student loans. I think taking out more loans is the best way to deal with the problem. Although borrowing more money will increase the debt load, the female student mentioned how the regulations on student loans were being eased. This will make it easier for them to pay the loans back. Also, using student loans for the tuition increase means they will graduate on time, which will enable them to get a job faster. Relying on student loans, which they had already used, means that they can devote their time to studying. Working more will affect their studies and stress them out.
1. tuition fees will go up
2.how to pay fees
3. two solution: increase working time/take out student loans
4. choice: student loans—①Increasing working time—can’t graduate on time
②changed regulations on student loans—can graduate on time
