An Announcement from the University
The University announced today that all campus construction projects will be carried out during summer vacation. According to the school authority, the move was prompted by student and faculty complaints about excessive disruption of classes and on-campus traffic due to new construction. Therefore, this change will make things more convenient for students, thanks to the very limited number of students on campus during the summer vacation. In addition, crews working around the clock will reduce the number of actual days spent in construction. Ideally, everything will be ready in time for Fall Semester.
Now hear a conversation between two students.
Question: The woman expresses her opinion about the decision of holding all constructions till the summer vacation. State her opinion and explain the reasons she gives for holding that opinion.
M: Susan, do you remember how you were always complaining about the new stadium they’re building by your dorm?
W: How could I forget? I couldn’t study at all!
M: Well, I just heard the news. The University will be stopping all construction till summer time.
What do you think? I’m new here so I don’t know.
W: Really? Wonderful! The construction on campus has really caused me a lot of trouble. First of all, it was so noisy and distracting. You know last year the construction took place in four parking lots all at the same time. And I couldn’t park my car, so I had to walk every day. I was late for most classes—and most of my professors were late too.
M: So the new policy will mean fewer disturbances to our studies.
W: That’s right! In summer, there’s almost no one on campus. So the noise and traffic trouble won’t bother anyone. Also, the weather is better.
M: Why does the weather matter?
W: I mean the workers can work every day. Last winter the weather was terrible, and the construction had to stop for a few days. And you know what... the whole project stretched out 2 months longer than it was supposed to. Not only did it take more time, the construction also cost a lot more money and was really inconvenient to students. But with the new policy put into effect, the campus will be quiet and things will get done on time and more cheaply.
M: Oh, I see. Great!
