Languages are of strategic importance for people and the planet. There is growing awareness that languages play a vital role in development, in ensuring cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue. Multilingualism is an essential factor in harmonious communication among peoples, and it is also regarded by the United Nations as a core value of the Organization. By promoting tolerance, multilingualism4 ensures effective and increased participation of all in the Organization’s work, as well as greater effectiveness, better performance and improved transparency.
   The United Nations is one of the world’s largest employers of language professionals. There are several hundred language staff who work in UN offices in New York, Geneva, Vienna and Nairobil, or at the United Nations regional commissions in Addis Ababa, Bangkok, Beirut, Geneva and Santiago. Translators and interpreters are not the only language professionals who are employed at the UN. UN language specialists also include editors, reference assistants, terminologists and verbatim reporters , etc.
   At official United Nations Charter body meetings and conferences, participants may speak in any of the six official languages. This is when interpreters play their role. What the participants speak are simultaneously rendered into the other five languages by conference interpreters, who interpret into their main language, with the exception of Arabic and Chinese interpreters. It is essential for all interpreters to have a wide-ranging knowledge of world affairs, subjects and United Nations processes. They must, in particular, master the specific vocabulary of the Organization.
   United Nations translators handle all kinds of documents, from statements by Member States to reports prepared by expert bodies. The documents they translate cover every topic on the United Nations agenda, including human rights, peace and security, and development. Actually, new issues arise every day.
   A key responsibility of translators is the standardization of terms in the six official languages. New or outdated terms are systematically gathered, researched and verified against authoritative sources, in consultation with in-house specialists from substantive departments, language professionals and outside sources, including technical experts and specialized websites. Verified terms are then stored in the multilingual database UNTERM.
   UN documents are issued simultaneously in the six official languages of the Organization (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish). Some core documents are also translated into German. This multilingual documentation is made possible by United Nations translators, whose job is to render clearly and accurately the content of original texts into their main language.
