There are great impediments to the general use of a standard in
pronunciation comparable to that existing in spelling (orthography).
One is the fact pronunciation is learnt "naturally" and unconsciously, but (1)______
orthography is learnt deliberately and consciously. Large numbers of us,
in fact, remains throughout our lives quite unconscious of what our (2)______
speech sounds like when we speak, and it often comes like a shock (3)______
when we first hear a recording of ourselves. It is not a voice we
recognize at once, and our own handwriting is something that we (4)______
almost always know. We begin the "natural" learning of pronunciation
long before we start learning to read or write, and in our early years we
go unconsciously imitating and practicing the pronunciation of (5)______
those around us for many more hours every day that we ever have (6)______
to spend learning even our difficult English spelling. It is
"natural", therefore, our speech-sounds should be those of our (7)______
immediate circle; after all, as we have seen, speech operates as a
means of holding together a community and gives a sense of (8)______
"belonging". We learn quite early to recognize a "stranger",
someone who speaks in an accent of a different community (9)______
perhaps only a few miles far away. (10)______ [br] (2)
