An old Chinese saying goes that "He that travels far knows much." It implies that personal experience counts much. In contrast to this statement, however, a former president of Harvard University once wrote that "books... are the wisest of counselors..." What do you think? Write an essay of about 400 words on the following topic:
Which is more important for you, knowledge from books or personal experience?

Which is more important for you, knowledge from books or personal experience?
Societies throughout the world seem to have a common belief that reading books benefits people greatly through their whole life. And there is no doubt for that. But knowledge from books has to be applied in real life to prove its value and real life experiences are far more important than knowledge from books.
A few simple questions, how can there be knowledge in the first place? No doubt, it’s the lessons we learned exploring the strange world around us. So knowledge comes from real life experience. And how was knowledge passed down from one generation to another when books weren’t invented yet? With these asked we come to realize that although books play a great role in the inheritance of knowledge, it has nothing to do with knowledge in the first place. Keeping this in mind, we analyze the disadvantages of knowledge from books.
To begin with, knowledge from books cannot be fully understood until one experiences it in real life. One may read in books that love is a wonderful thing and it also hurts people. Having had this knowledge in mind, one may begin to believe that he knows about love. But not until the day comes when he really falls in love and feels the ecstasy and pain entangled with love can one truly understand the meaning of love. It’s the same with other things. Knowledge from books just seems shallower compared to personal experiences.
Secondly, knowledge from books can be misleading and not necessarily true. Books are just old knowledge. If one sticks to them and refuses to study the real world, there can be no progress happening in the world. Great things are created, not learned. And it’s human creativity that guarantees our bright future.
Finally, knowledge from books would be useless if we don’t apply them in our everyday life. The value of the knowledge in books is little when we just read to know.
It’s time we stepped out the ivory tower to see the world around us. The essence of life can only be found by living in it. As a line from Lu You goes: Knowledge from books is shallow, and one has to experience something oneself to fully understand it.
