答案         Should Children of Different Abilities Be Educated Together or Separately?
There are different opinions concerning the issue whether children of different abilities should be educated together or separately. Though it is true that children can be given special treatment when educated separately, I still think it more beneficial to teach children together.
In the first place, children of different abilities can share with and learn from one another when they are educated together. As is known to all, every person is unique. Children of various abilities and interests being educated together get more opportunities to learn about themselves and other children. When they understand themselves and others better and be more aware of their own defects and merits, they may try to eliminate the defects and strengthen the merits by learning from peers. Undoubtedly, this helps children to grow.
In addition, learning together, children can become more cooperative and learn to get along well with others. When children of different abilities work together to face a challenge, they treat the issue from different viewpoints, and in the process learn to express themselves and to understand others’ different opinions. They learn to negotiate, to compromise and to reach agreement. These are all useful communicative skills for their future life.
Finally, mixed education can promote all-around development of children’s characters, while on the contrary, separate education may probably end up hindering their potential development in the future. It is widely acknowledged that one’s talent in different fields does not develop to the same extent. For example, a child may seem to be talented in painting at age 5, but his real life-time interest may be in dancing. If at age 5, he were put to learn with other children of the same interest(i.e., painting), he would probably be deprived of the possibility of learning to dance altogether. However, on the contrary, there are no such risks with mixed education.
To sum up, I think it better to teach children of different abilities together. It helps the children to understand each other’s strengths and shortcomings, to develop their social skills, and to promote development of their whole potentials. Even though separate education may be more efficient in addressing each individual’s strengths, its risk of possibly depriving the child of his potentials is so severe that it is just unacceptable.
