The Most Important Characteristic of a Co-worker
In the workplace, you meet a variety of people with diverse backgrounds and you are required to maintain sound relationships with many of them in order to have a pleasant work environment. And in most instances you have to rely on them. From my point of view, a co-worker needs to have some important characteristics, of which cooperation can be counted as the most important.
Although our culture seems to put emphasis on individualism and reward those who are not good team players but mavericks, there is no denying the fact that employees with a cooperative spirit enjoy great popularity in the corporate environment. Such people know perfectly that they are always part of a larger team, and know better than to put their interests ahead of those of the team. In a word, they can work as part of a team and know how to work well with others to accomplish common goals.
Being a team player is very important. A company is like a machine and everyone in it acts as a part. When all parts cooperate, there is a chance to succeed. If someone isn’ t cooperative, and wants to go his own way, he won’t be of much help to the growth of the company. I have met several people who are fired, even if they are over-qualified for their jobs, because they have failed to cooperate with their colleges. Although they did their part wonderfully, but when discussing with others in a brainstorming session, they seemed reserved and unwilling to express their opinions, and when others ran into difficulties, they just stood by looking at what would happen next. As a result, the project made slow progress. Therefore, I believe that if employees do not cooperate with each other, it would be a devastating blow for a company.
Also remember that a large part of teamwork is getting along with other people. So a good co-worker can also keep a good relationship with others. He can be trusted as a real friend or even as a family member. And working with him can make you feel at ease.
It is obvious that we spend most of our days at office working with people with their own characteristics. In my view, it is the cooperative spirit that makes a good co-worker. After all, if a group of people is pulling in different directions, then less is going to be accomplished. So if you are an up-and-coming employee, before you reach the top you have to learn to play well with others. If you don’t, you will be fired long before you hit a position of power.
