答案         Should College Students Have More Compulsory Courses or Elective Courses?
Besides their own majors, university students can also have access to many elective courses that may or may not be directly related to their academic focus. And in some cases, elective courses serve the function of cultivating more all-round students, providing students with a wider horizon and opportunities for exploring more possibilities. So, as far as I am concerned, more elective courses should be provided in colleges and universities.
That more elective courses are introduced does not necessarily lead to the decrease of compulsory courses. With a given number of compulsory courses, more elective courses mean that the same amount of students will have more choices. The number of students in a certain course will be limited, with the accompanying benefit of more attention on each individual. This benefit means so much when we take into consideration the enrollment expansion in recent years. Another positive effect of such a policy could be found in the fact that it will encourage the lecturers to explore what would interest both the students and themselves. And the competition among the courses will also be translated into a driving force for the lecturers to make improvement in their courses. And if we see this issue from a more general perspective, it is also related to the distinction and characteristics of a university. Compulsory courses, with the standard teaching goals, plans and sometimes similar courseware, can not really give expression to the focus and characteristics of a university, while the elective ones can actually manifest the features of its research and highlight its strength.
For most Chinese students, university is the place where they start having elective courses. The abundance of choices, the attractiveness of various fields, and the uniqueness of many courses all contribute to the fact that students are trying to be included in many elective courses. In western educational system, elective courses are available from an earlier time.  This design allows the students to follow their own interests and passions, so that a better result can be expected. Compared with western countries, our higher educational institutions have already been late in introducing the design of elective courses, so we have to do more to increase the numbers, as well as enhance the quality of the courses.
Of course, many problems can be easily found about elective courses in colleges and universities, such as the lack of conformity in the scoring system. In fact, once these problems be properly addressed, elective courses can surely make a bigger contribution to the development of students as well as lecturers and even universities.
