答案                                China’s War with the Desert
Desert expansion has accelerated with each successive decade since 1950. Old deserts are advancing and new ones are forming, forcing Beijing to fight on several fronts. And, worse, the growing deserts are gaining momentum, occupying an ever larger piece of China’s territory each year. Therefore, measures should be taken to tackle the gravity of the situation.
It is known that desertification is largely attributed to overgrazing and overplowing. As to the former, huge flocks of sheep and goats in the northwest are stripping the land of its protective vegetation. The wind then does the rest, removing the soil and productive rangeland into desert. In order to solve this problem, farmers should be encouraged to reduce their flocks of sheep and goats. It is possible that they be required to raise livestock with forage gathered by hand, and thus make grasslands to recover. As to the latter, planting trees and grass in denuded areas maybe an appropriate solution. Farmers should be paid by local governments to plant trees in their grain land.
The entire world has a stake in China’s winning the war with the advancing deserts. Over the past few years China has made great progress in controlling desertification with a massive commitment of financial and human resources.
