    As the two pie charts illustrate, there were considerable changes in people’s ways of communication in the 20 years from 1975 to 1995. Letters which dominated half of the communications market in 1975 took up only four percent of the people’s choices while the percentage of computers doubled and that of phones almost doubled in those two decades.
    Such dramatic changes reflected the convenience the modern ways of communication brought to people. With the quickening pace of life, most people did not want to take the trouble of writing and posting a letter and then waiting endlessly for the answer, which could be finished in several minutes. Over the telephone, people could talk pleasantly no matter how far away they were from each other. With a click of the mouse, the mail would reach the receiver’s mail box in a second.
    Since the telephone and the computer could save people so much time, money and energy, people were likely to depend more on them to communicate with others than on the traditional letters.
