答案                            SCHOOLBAGS: TOO HEAVY FOR SCHOOLKIDS
These days we often hear schoolkids grumbling about their heavy home work load. This is not surprising when we see their schoolbags bulging with all sorts of textbooks and workbooks. They are required to take so many courses that they have to sit up late struggling with their assignments.
In spite of the clamor of the public for an end to this situation, the excessive pressure imposed on the pupils has not been relieved. The reasons for this are not difficult to figure out. First, a great part of the pressure comes from the parents, who have gone all lengths to help their children improve academic performance and urge them for early intellectual achievements: calling in private tutors or sending them out to various tutoring centers. Pupils at large seem to be driven by one message: Excel in academic performance. It has, in fact, been echoing in their heads ever since they started school. They have been pushed to score high, test well, and finish first.
On the other hand, teachers should be held responsible, too. To them, scores are not only the mark of success or failure for a particular student but also a measure of professional performance of their own. Many of them do not-try with great efforts to enhance efficiency by improving their teaching methods. Instead, they just assign more drills and exercises, thrust more books into the pupils’ backpacks, and stuff their heads with as many rules or facts as possible.
More and more people are crying out for "lightening kids’ schoolbags." To my mind, it appears comparatively easy to relieve pupils of some pressure—to assign less homework and to cut off a few courses—although it calls for much care and efforts on the part of both teachers and parents. But what is more important is to "humanize" the current educational system—to make education ready for the future. Just as many educators have pointed out, when it comes to a child’s well-being, we should be as concerned with character as with success. If we have reared a well-mannered, good, decent person, we should take pleasure and pride in that fact. More likely than not, if we have achieved these goals, the child’s success will take care of itself.
