    Many Chinese college students find it awkward to describe their English language skills. For at least six years as most of them have learned it, they can only read and understand English but cannot speak it well, that is to say, they become mute when it is time for them to communicate in English.
    Causes to the mute English are various. Among them examination-oriented education should be the first to blame. Chinese students regard English as nothing more than a test subject, so there is no need to waste much time in practicing it orally. In addition, Chinese students are afraid of making mistakes when speaking English, so they would rather keep quiet. The less they speak English, the more mistakes they would make when they have to speak, which becomes a vicious cycle. The mute English brings harm to our students and the nation as well, as it blocks the effective communication and cooperation with others.
    It is high time to solve the problem of mute English. First, students and teachers should all have a correct concept about language study. Then the interest in oral practice could be developed if there is a favorable and encouraging language environment. To speak English loud is not a hard thing, and let’s do it from today on.
