W: So we’re talking about camping today. Did you ever go camping when you were a kid?
M: Yes, I did. I usually went to Cub camping, you know, like Boy Scouts.(9)It was always in summer. It lasted probably about a week.
W: What did you do at Cub camping?
M: We did different things. One thing I remember is archery, like bows and arrows. So we had a target and we practiced trying to hit the target. I was really bad at it. It was quite difficult and I nearly hurt my arm with the bow.
W: OK. Were there other games you played or sports you did besides archery?
M: Yeah, we also learned how to go canoeing and swimming and we also went hiking. You know I really went in for hiking.
W: Really? Did you learn how to start fire without matches?
M: Yeah, we did. We were taught to use two sticks, rub them together and then start a fire.
W: Wow. So did you cook at night?
M: Yes, but I don’t think it was very good. Actually I remember I got really sick one time and my parents had to come and pick me up. I think 1 got a bit of food poisoning.
W: Bad luck. Final question, what do you think of camping away from home?
M: It was easy. I remember feeling a little freer and more independent away from my parents, with less rules and regulations. I never did get homesick.
