It’s located in the center of Beijing City, to the north of Tian’anmen Square. It’s shaped in rectangle, 960 meters from the south to the north and 750 meters from the east to the west, covering 72 hectares and with a total building area of 150,000 square meters. The Imperial Palace is the largest and most completely conserved ancient wooden palace in the world in existence. It’s divided into the outer court and the inner court. The outer court was the place where the emperor dealt with state affairs and the inner court was the living palace for the emperor and his family. The Imperial Palace was listed by UNESCO as one of the World Cultural Heritage sites in 1987.
