On Exam Pressure
Almost all students share a strong sense of pressure before exams. The common symptoms displayed in many "pressured" students range from mild annoyance and nervousness to deep anxiety and sleeplessness--all negative feelings harmful to one’s physical and mental health. That’s why many students have developed a hostile attitude toward test pressure, and are only too eager to get rid of it altogether.
But fortunately not everyone suffer miserably under exam pressure. For those few who are able to think rationally and optimistically about everything, pressure from tests may not be such a bad thing. Aware that human beings have a natural inclination to be idle and lazy, they welcome exam pressure as a motivating force that pushes them to work harder for greater achievements. These students often emerge as winners of exams, successes in life.
In my opinion, exam pressure is a strong, wild horse, which can create magic as well as chaos. The key is how you tame it and ride it. To get this horse of exam pressure running to your advantage, you should first reach a real understanding of it. First, exams are meant to exert pressure on students, and it is quite normal to feel a sense of pressure before tests. This indicates you are worrying about your test performance because you really care about it. Second, if you just keep worrying and do nothing about it, this sense of pressure will lead to a depressed, unhappy mental state. By contrast, if you take your worried feeling as a matter of fact and focus your effort on the preparation for the test, this sense of pressure automatically turns into a positive force, making you learn more actively and purposefully.
Therefore a student working under pressure is not necessarily an unhappy one. If handled properly, pressure can provide motivation, an opportunity to learn more knowledge.
