W: Professor Barns, I was wondering if I could have just a few minutes of your time.
M: Come on in and have a seat, Sally. What can I do for you?
W:(1)I was hoping you’d have a look at the outline for my term paper. It seems to be a little out of control.
M:(l)Here let’s start off with a look at your thesis statement. Mme, OK. Your problem begins right here with this. Do you remember what the thesis statement should consist of?
W: My understanding is that it should contain the subject that will be discussed and the approach that you will take in discussing it. Is that right?
M: Yes, it is.(2)But you have to remember that the thesis statement defines the scope of your paper.
W: I see, and(2)I made the scope too broad, haven’t I?
M:(2)I am afraid so. In your statement you say that technological and social change is as far reaching as that of the industrial revolution in human civilization. But after that you propose to support this assertion with a number of key technologies and their potential impact on society.
W: Hearing you say it. It sounds like a big job.
M: It is to say the least. And that is the root of your problem. So what do you think you can do to save your paper?
W:(3)I guess the most obvious solution would be to limit my discussion to one of these technologies. To the one that I think will have the greatest impact.
M: Exactly.(3)If you do that I think you will find that your task will become much more manageable.
W: Thank you, professor. If I redo my thesis statement in the outline, could you take another look at it before I start the actual writing?
M: Sure.(3)You can drop it off after class on Thursday if you like.
W: That would be perfect. Thanks again, professor.
M: It’s no trouble at all, Sally.
