Every child in Britain must by law receive full-time education from the age of 5 to 15.(20)If a child fails to attend school, a School Attendance Office will come to his house to find out why, and if there is no good reason, the parents may be charged. But the parents themselves have a certain amount of choices as to what school the child goes to—in fact(21)they can educate the child themselves if they wished, provided their timetable, methods and equipment were approved by an inspector.
The great majority of parents, however, send their children to state schools, where education and equipment, including textbooks and so on, are entirely free. Some children go before the age of 5 to kindergartens. Most start at 5 in an infants’ school. These schools are co-educated for boys and girls together, though the teachers are normally women. Hours of attendance vary: they are commonly from 9:00 till 12:00 noon and 2:00 till 4:00 p. m. Saturdays and Sundays are free.(22)The school year begins in September, and is divided into three terms, with holidays at Christmas, Easter and in the summer. The summer holidays are the longest, lasting throughout August and part of September.
After 2 years in the infants’ school, the child enters a junior school. Boys usually find themselves in a school for boys only, and they see masters for the first time instead of mistresses. There is less free activity in the classroom, less art and handicrafts; they begin to have more courses to prepare them for secondary schools.
