Most people enjoy fiction, but non-fiction is becoming increasingly popular—especially books about the environment and world politics. These kinds of books are popular with adults of all ages. People seem to be more concerned about what is happening in the world around them—and I certainly think that’s a good thing. Children and teenagers are almost all intrigued by the latest adventures of Harry Potter!
I don’t think that age has much to do with it. I think that it depends more on people’s interests. For example, twenty years ago, few people were very interested in the environment. Now, almost everyone is environmentally aware. We’ve all heard of global warning and mass extinction. I think that books on the same topics as things on TV have become popular too.
I think that there are some kinds of books that men and women like, but there are also some kinds that men prefer or that women prefer. I think funny books and non-fiction are fairly equally popular with both genders. Women seem to like romances and classics more, whilst men tend to go for adventure novels and science fiction more.
I think that a good book should be entertaining, if it’s a work of fiction, and informative and thought-provoking if it is non-fiction. Of course, non-fiction can be entertaining and fiction can be informative, but the primary aims should be as I said. I think that a good book also uses language well and even introduces new or little known words to the reader.
I would like to write a series of detective stories—something like Agatha Christie wrote with her Poirot or Miss Marple characters. I would have some interesting characters in the books, based on people I know. The books would be primarily mysteries, but there would be humour and wit in them too.
