答案 Big company in general
- Are there many big companies in your countries?
Yes, there are many big companies in China, especially some very big state-owned enterprises (SOE) in the fields of mining, oil, water and electricity supply. Because they concern the foundation of the economy, they remain state-owned despite of the marketisation trend in China in the past three decades. Due to the special status, some of them are directly owned and controlled by the state. They are all big names you have probably heard of, such as Sinopec and PetroChina. Besides the SOEs, there are many big private companies as well, including domestic companies and overseas ones, such as Wanda, Microsoft and IBM.
- What do you think is the difference between big companies and small companies?
I think small companies are more flexible in making decisions and making changes than big ones. As small companies have fewer employee and shareholders, it is more feasible to make decisions in a very short period of time. Big companies, having a larger number of employees, will need more time to reach a decision. On the other hand, big companies have more resources that small ones do not have. In fact, big companies are usually the ones that set the standards in the industry. What’s more, big companies might pay better than small ones and provide better insurance and welfare.
- What are the good things about working for a big company?
I think there are a lot of benefits of working for a big company. Firstly, big companies offer stable payment and good welfare to employees. They usually have better support systems for their employees as well, for example longer maternity leave and flexible working hours arrangement. Secondly, big companies are usually the forerunners in the industry so employees will have a sense of satisfaction from work. It is also a proud thing to tell one’s family and friends if one is working in a big company. Besides, working for a big company is a good opportunity to improve oneself as you are working with the best in the industry.

- How can a small company grow big?
There are many things for a small company to do to grow big, but I think the following two factors are most important. Firstly, it needs investment to realise its ambition, so it should present itself to venture capital investors to attract their money. With sufficient funds, the companies can make the products they designed and can deliver the services they envisaged. Secondly, small companies should hire a lot of smart and hard-working people to work for them, ranging from generating great ideas, making great products and keeping the development momentum. Just think how Apple grew from a four-person company in a garage to a multinational company it is today! I think Apple did great in these two aspects I listed above.
- Should big companies donate more to charities?
Yes. I think big companies should donate more to charities. As a saying goes, greater power, greater responsibility. I think big companies should take the social responsibility to make the world a better place. Donating more to charities is an important way for companies to show their social responsibility. For example, after the Sichuan earthquake in 2008, many big companies donated a lot of money for disaster relief. I think this is a great way to help the disaster-stricken areas. This is also a great way for companies to show their gratitude to the community and pay back the society.
- Should big companies be punished more seriously if they break the law?
No, I don’t think it’s fair to punish big companies more if they break the law. I believe that all should be equal in front of law, so even though big companies earn more, it does not mean they should be punished more. They should be punished fairly according to the law. I understand that some people think big companies are the leaders of the industry and should therefore be punished more so as to set a good example for other companies. But I don’t agree on this view. Just think the opposite of this proposition, should small companies be punished less seriously if they break the law? I think the answer is a No as well. I think law should be practiced equally instead of depending on the size of the company.
