答案
The chart compares men and women in Australia in terms of the subjects they studied in 1995.
The biggest gender difference was observed in Engineering, where 19% of male students chose this subject, in marked contrast to 2% of female students. The gender gap was also clear in Maths and Computing, with around 14% and 10% of males pursuing a degree in these two fields.
In contrast, female students’ favourite subject was Arts & Humanities, where they outnumbered men (19% to 13%). Health was another popular subject, attracting 15% of female students, more than three times the figure for men (only 4%). Women were also more likely to study education than men (10% and 6% respectively).
The gender gap was narrow in Accounting & Economics, which was selected by 13% of men and 11% of their female counterparts. Likewise, in Business Studies, the enrolment rate of female students (9%) was closely matched by that of males (8%).
Overall, scientific subjects were basically male-dominated while Arts and Humanities were more popular with women than men. The gender gap was narrow in business-related subjects.
