问题 Narrator
Listen to a conversation between a student and a dean of admissions.
[br] What can be inferred about the student?
[Student]    Hello. Could I speak to the Dean of Admissions? I have an appointment with her at 12:00a.m..
[Dean]    Hi. My name is David Blade and I am the Dean of Admissions. You must be Judy Smith. It’s a little bit hectic out here so why don’t we step into my office.
[Student]    Sure, that sounds great.
[Dean]    So, Judy...What brings you here today? I know the application period isn’t for another month but I can answer whatever inquiries you may have.
[Student]    I really appreciate you taking the time out to see me. I know it must be a hassle. The application period doesn’t start for another month but I just wanted to clarify a couple of things. I just feel like it’s better to be safe than sorry.
[Dean]    I totally understand. College is a very important decision, maybe one of the biggest decisions you’ve had to make up until now. I welcome these meetings. Ask away.
[Student]    I’ve made a list of potential questions. Hang on a sec...OK, first off, what is the procedure for applying to this university?
[Dean]    Well, there are several ways you can apply. The first option would be through the Internet. The online application method is the most convenient. It saves a lot of time and effort. But we do charge a fee for all applications. The second option would be via mail. If you want to receive an application form via mail, just give us a call and we’ll send you an application form. You just have to fill it out and send it back to us before the deadline.
[Student]    What is the application form comprised of?
[Dean]    To keep it simple, we just have the application form, official school transcript, letters of recommendations, and various test scores. You must also write an admissions essay describing yourself. If you choose to apply online, you can upload the following items but documents such as the transcript and test scores must be sent directly from the source. For example, the SAT scores must be sent directly to the university from the test center and your transcript must be sent directly from your high school.
[Student]    How competitive is your university?
[Dean]    Our school is considered to be highly competitive. Our average GPA score for last year’s applicants was an A-and our median SAT score was 1380.
[Student]    What’s the acceptance rate for your university?
[Dean]    Last year, 60,000 students sent in their applications. We accepted 7,000 U.S. residents and accepted 3,000 international students. Out of the 10,000 students we sent out acceptance letters to, 9,500 students decided to attend our university.
[Student]    Is there a difference between international students and U.S. residents in terms of the application process?
[Dean]    All international students are required to present a test score for a language proficiency test. We do accept different test formats and that information can be found on our International Student Services website. Besides that, there are no other differences.
[Student]    OK. Great. I have no further questions. Thank you for your time. You’ll be hearing from me in a month.
[Dean]    I wish you the best of luck, Judy. I do admire your work ethic. Being prepared won’t do any harm. Hopefully I’ll be seeing you in the Fall. Please do visit again.
7.  What are the speakers mainly discussing?
8.  Why does the student visit the Dean of Admissions?
Narrator Listen again to a part of the conversation. Then answer the question.
