Functions of Family
    A family can be defined as a set of people who are related by blood, marriage, or adoption, and who share the primary responsibility for reproduction and caring for members of society. Although it has many different forms, as a social institution, the family is present in all cultures. As a basic unit of sociology, what functions does the family perform in it? According to William F. Ogburn, the family performs four very important functions in a society, namely, reproduction, protection, socialization, and supplying affection and companionship.
Student A  Hi, what’s up?
Student B  I have been perplexed by the marketing course that is required for my major.
Student A  Haven’t you passed the examination yet?
Student B  No, I haven’t taken this course.
Student A  Did you miss the time to choose this course?
Student B  No, I chose it at the expected time. But this course is only given in the evenings.
Student A  You don’t like having an evening class?
Student B  No. Now I have a part-time job in a supermarket every evening. You know, I have to support myself.

答案 If a society wants to support itself, it must replace dying members with new born ones. Reproducing new members is the function of reproduction. The second is the function of protection. Human infants require continuous care and economic security and depend on their elderly family members for a long period. The third is the function of socialization. Parents regulate a child’s behavior and transfer the norms, values, and language of a culture to the child. By doing this, they help the child to fit into society,  which is the final purpose of socialization. Affection and companionship is the last function. The family provides the members with a warm and intimate relationship and helps them feel satisfied and secure.
