问题
A: Mr. Wang, welcome to our radio program. Today we’ll be talking about gardens. There are many classical gardens in both China and the West, yet their structures, styles and ideas are quite different. Mr. Wang, what does a typical Chinese garden look like?
A: That sounds very different from traditional Italian and French gardens. The Gardens of Versailles, for example, are composed of broad avenues, rows of trees and artificial lakes. The grass and trees are all trimmed in beautiful geometrical shapes. Nearly everything is man-made here. Mr. Wang, what do you think are the reasons of these differences in gardens between China and the West?
A: In the UK, one may notice many gardens that are a bit like the Chinese ones. They are a type of Western garden called the landscape garden, which was created by British designers. It was said that the designers learned from the Chinese gardening arts, and followed the same rule of protecting and respecting the nature. And in recent years, China has been borrowing the Western principles when designing gardens.

B: Thank you for having me here. Chinese gardens are a representative of Asian gardens, and have a long history. The beauty of nature is the core of the design of Chinese gardens. Small hills, lakes, rocks and plants are the main parts of the garden. The original features of the nature are kept in the garden, which is full of fun and vitality. The buildings are integrated with natural landscape. Although built by humans, the buildings look in harmony with the trees, hills and lakes. Also, in the Chinese garden, if you look at the same scenery from different places, you will get a totally new experience.
B: I believe this is related to the cultural ideas of the two sides. China in ancient times promoted the idea that humans should live in harmony with the nature, and always respect the nature. Therefore, Chinese people tried not to change the look of the landscape to fully show the natural beauty. However, people in the West wished to defeat and change the nature and believed that the human power was greater than the nature. This idea was also shown in Western gardens, where the shapes of the trees were uniform and there were heavy traces of artificiality. Despite the different styles, the two types of gardens are excellent representatives of world gardening arts.
