A: Mr. Wang, welcome to our radio program. Today we’ll be talking about gardens. There are many classical gardens in both China and the West, yet their structures, styles and ideas are quite different. Mr. Wang, what does a typical Chinese garden look like?
B：谢谢您邀请我来。中国园林是亚洲园林的代表，有着悠久的历史。自然之美是中国园林设计的核心。园林中以小山、湖水、岩石、植物为主，保留自然本身的特点，生动有趣。建筑与自然景观融为一体，虽然是人工修建的，但和树木、山水放在一起却很和谐。另外，中国园林讲究“移步换景”，从不同的地点去看园林中的同一处景色，会有全新的体验。
A: That sounds very different from traditional Italian and French gardens. The Gardens of Versailles, for example, are composed of broad avenues, rows of trees and artificial lakes. The grass and trees are all trimmed in beautiful geometrical shapes. Nearly everything is man-made here. Mr. Wang, what do you think are the reasons of these differences in gardens between China and the West?
B：我认为这和双方的文化观念有关。在古代，中国就主张，人与自然要和谐相处，人要始终尊重自然。因此，在设计园林时，中国人尽量不改变景观原本的模样，充分展现自然之美。而在西方，人们当时希望战胜和改造自然，认为人类的力量超过自然。西方园林也体现了这种观念，树木形状非常统一，人工的痕迹很重。两种园林虽然风格不同，但都是世界园林艺术的优秀代表。
A: In the UK, one may notice many gardens that are a bit like the Chinese ones. They are a type of Western garden called the landscape garden, which was created by British designers. It was said that the designers learned from the Chinese gardening arts, and followed the same rule of protecting and respecting the nature. And in recent years, China has been borrowing the Western principles when designing gardens.
