Mounting pressure from the United States to impose new sanctions against Iran put Tehran’s nuclear program at the focus as the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog convened on Monday.
"I am increasingly disturbed by the current stalemate and the brewing confrontation—a stalemate that urgently needs to be broken, and a confrontation that must be defused," Mohamed ElBaradei, Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said in his introductory statement to the agency’s board meeting.
The 35-nation board of governors of the IAEA started a regular meeting here on Monday, discussing topics ranging from the agency’s 2006 annual report to nuclear safety and security issues, with Iran’s nuclear program set to be the focus.
Kenyan police said Tuesday they are holding three people suspected to have been involved in Monday’s explosion which killed one person and injured 37 others in the capital of Nairobi.
Police spokesman, Eric Kiraith, told a news conference in Nairobi that three people of "Somali origin" reported by eyewitnesses to have disembarked from a taxi near the scene moments before the explosion were innocent Rwandese.
"It has now been established that the three were Rwandese nationals who were on normal cause of their private affairs. They were interrogated and freed," Kiraith told a news conference in Nairobi.
Clashes between police and anti-G8 demonstrators injured more than 400 police officers during a huge protest against the upcoming summit in northern Germany, authorities said yesterday. Protest organizers said 520 demonstrators were hurt.
Police said 63 remained behind bars after violence that broke out Saturday on the sidelines of a demonstration by tens of thousands in the north German port of Rostock.
Despite their riot gear, 433 officers were hurt, including 30 who were hospitalized with broken bones and lacerations after fighting into the evening Saturday with some 2,000 protesters who showered them with beer bottles and fist-sized rocks, police said.
After a poor result in a first round of parliamentary elections, France’s Socialists sought to limit the damage yesterday, chasing alliances in the face of a likely crushing victory by President Nicolas Sarkozy’s conservatives in the final round.
For the first time in nearly three decades, French voters look set to return to power the current legislative majority, a resounding endorsement of Sarkozy’s push to reform Europe’s third-largest economy.
In Sunday’s first round, his UMP party won 39.6 percent of the vote, while the opposition Socialists had 24.7 percent. The results give the conservatives a strong advantage heading into the decisive runoff next Sunday, putting them on track to expand their absolute majority in the 577-seat parliament.
Rain and landslides have killed more than 80 people in Bangladesh as monsoon showers swept the country, officials said yesterday.
Heavy rains triggered landslides that buried homes, killing 71 people and leaving scores of others missing in the port city of Chittagong, police and witnesses said.
Some 70 others were admitted to hospitals with injuries while nearly 100 more are missing, rescuers and Chittagong district officials said.
"We are facing a hell of a situation here," one rescuer said by telephone. "It’s still heavily raining, and visibility has sharply declined. Roads are all under water," one rescuer said.
"We are facing huge difficulty in trying to help the victims," said another rescue official.
