We sometimes can tolerate others’ mistakes because we know that to err is human. But if we make mistakes ourselves, we are reluctant to admit them, and are more likely to put the blame on others. A little incident brought me face to face with this embarrassing truth.
Once on a crowded train I went for a cup of hot water at the end of the car. People before me left the water running after they had filled their containers because the plastic part of the tap was worn out. When it was my turn, I did the same, though feeling a little uneasy about the waste.
"Hey! Turn it off!" A voice snapped from behind. It was a heavy-set middle-aged man.
"I would have if I could, can’t you see?" I retorted, somewhat annoyed at his rudeness. "I’m not a plumber anyway. The crew should have fixed it earlier and should not have let the tap worsen to such a condition." Dimly, however, I felt that I had done something wrong.
"Daddy, I can turn it off. I’m not afraid of being scalded," declared a boy behind him.
Almost instantly I felt my cheeks burning. That was the true reason I had been denying. I had always complained about the lack of hot water on crowded trains and cursed the service. But this time I was one of those who should be blamed.
That experience taught me to be more discreet when I want to put the blame on others. I have since tried to avoid making the same foolish mistake again. That experience also convinced me that "to err is human, and to blame it on others is more human."
