In recent years the computer technology has been developing by leaps and bounds and the usefulness of computers is becoming more obvious each day. Now they can "read" handwritten letters, play chess, compose music, and even design other computers. Sometimes computers seem almost human so that they are called "thinking machine" or simply "electric brains.” They are so powerful that some people are afraid that some day computer will replace the human brain. This, however, will not be possible. There are mainly two reasons.
Firstly, even though computers are taking over some of the tasks that were once accomplished by our brain, they are not yet advanced enough to replace us. The human brain has more than 10 billion cells, while a computer has only a few hundred thousand components. For some time to come, then, our brain will be at least 10,000 times more complex—and more efficient—than a computer.
Secondly, even if some day man could make a computer much more complex than the human brain, it still could not replace it, because computer can work only according to a given “program," a carefully worked-out set of instructions devised by programmers. Besides, no matter how sophisticated a computer may become, it Would not be able to deal with "contingencies”—at least not as efficiently as the human brain. It always works in a planned way. Without a program, it can not even do the simplest calculations, which a child can do with ease.
To sum up, computer, the so-called "ultimate machine," is an invention by humans with brains. It cannot rival the human brain in the least and will never replace the human brain, because the gap between them is so large that it can never be bridged.
