Many people supported the campaign called "comic relief" by wearing false noses of red plastic. Television weather forecasters, shop assistants, school children and even a foreign office spokesman were seen in red noses and the sale of plastic noses is believed to have raised about two million pounds. A comedy show which went on late into the night on the BBC main television channel brought in pledges of well over five million pounds.
