答案                 A Higher Degree Is a Sure Way to Success?

To answer the question properly, we have first of all to see what success means. Success could mean fame, wealth, high social status, and so on. But if success is sean solely as achievements at work, or in other words, one’ s competence m carry out one’s duties, I would say, a higher degree, whether it be MA, MS or Ph. D. , does not necessarily lead one to success.
On the one hand, higher degree holders may fail to do their job properly. As a college student, I have seen many instructors (including professors) cannot impart knowledge the way the students expect them to. We used to have an instructor of reading with an MA degree. She may be knowledgeable, for she has done research and may have published papers, but to have her classes is an uncomfortable experience. She makes an otherwise very interesting come dull and boring. What is worse, in places where she is supposed to give clear answers, she is vague and ambiguous. A great deal is left to be desired before she can be called successful.
On the other hand, those who are successful are not necessarily higher degree holders. There are so many high achievers in various trades and professions in our society. Bus conductor Li Suli is a case in point. She does not possess any academic degree, but she is a model in her work. She says, "A bus has its terminal, but to serve the people has no endpoint." She is devoted to her work with warmth and enthusiasm, and regards the comfort and satisfaction of passengers as her great success.
Having said the above, I do not mean that all higher degree holders are good-for-nothing. There is no denying that a higher degree may help a person to succeed and there are many success stories of Masters and Ph. Ds. What I mean is that a higher degree may be a necessary condition for success, but it is never a sufficient condition.
