答案                 The Advantages of Tourism Industry in China
In ancient China, we were taught to gain knowledge from 10,000 books and accumulate experiences from traveling 10,000 miles. This age-old wisdom is ever truer for modem China, because traveling across the country, or even around the world, has been made much easier than before. In this context, I believe the tourism industry has at least three benefits for China.
First of all, tourism industry is an alternative income generator for some less developed areas in China. Given the disparity between the east and the west, people living in some villages are impoverished and rely mostly on cash crops to make ends meet. If tourism industry is thriving in these areas, visitors will come and spend money on souvenirs, catering, and hospitality services, which contributes immensely to the local economy.
Secondly, tourism industry is part of a solution to the severe unemployment problem. According to statistics, tourism provides 17.4 million jobs in China, or 2.3% of total employment last year, and is forecast to support 20.4 million jobs, or 2.5% of the total, by the next decade. These figures are encouraging Chinese tourism industry. If the industry is booming in the next few years, it will employ more graduates and professionals, which to a greater or lesser degree alleviates the tension of unemployment for graduates.
Thirdly, as traveling enriches visitors’ knowledge in a relaxing way, the development of tourism industry leads to a broadened horizon of our citizens. For instance, Cantonese people used to think that all the countrymen outside Guangdong are northerners. This absurd misconception could be rectified by taking trips to various parts of the country. Through sight-seeing and exploration in different destinations, the- understanding among Chinese will be surely enhanced. Above all, we can get ourselves acquainted with much invaluable knowledge from traveling, ranging from the folklore to customs, from legends to historical facts.
Some people are worried about the environmental damages caused by tourism. I believe that a compromised answer is to pursue ecotourism, which poses no threats to the local ecology and at the same time offers us a relaxing and enlightening way of spending holidays.
In conclusion, tourism industry is a driving force for the economic development in remote areas, a great source of job opportunities and a window through which we widen our knowledge. Though we cannot deny the defects tourism may bring, the advantages can surely outweigh its disadvantage if we can develop a sustainable tourism.
